Active gardeners consider autumn not as the end of the garden season, but as the beginning of their spring garden. Now, when there are so many things to prepare, it’s time to do important things before hanging up the spatula for the winter. In this podcast, Joe Lamp’l discusses some of the important tasks of putting your garden to bed. And the efforts you are making now will pay off next spring.

Putting the garden to bed

If you’ve been there since the beginning of the 26 episode series, we’ve spent a whole gardening season together. And although autumn marks the end of the summer growing season, I hope you are inspired to continue. But if you hang up your spatula for the season, no problem! But there are important household chores that you’ll want to do in your backyard to make the most of next season.

First, clean the garden and garden beds. Pick up the used plants and place them in the compost heap. But one thing to keep in mind is that some of your plants may have seed heads, which are really nice to have in your garden in autumn and winter, as they are an excellent source of food for birds and other wild animals. I know that I always plant big sunflowers in my garden. They are a great compliment to the garden when they are in full bloom, but the real pleasure is the role they play now. Although there’s nothing to see here, the birds don’t seem to care, and in winter you should see goldfinches. They like to choose seeds from faded flowers. The same applies to other flowers in my garden.

But for all plants that don’t have a dual purpose as a habitat or food source, I remove them and send them to the compost heap. These are all except those that may show signs of illness. If I add them, and the compost does not become warm enough in winter to finish pathogenic microorganisms, and this is a real possibility, then I risk bringing these ailments into my garden next season. So if you experience the same problem, don’t take any chances. finish off the ailmented plants or collect them and send them to the trash. Despite the fact that I am against the disposal of excess waste, in this matter I think that this is really the best situation overall. No one else wants this evil, even on their plants.

And in this regard, I remove all the weeds that I see, but I add to my compost only those that have not formed seed heads. As with plant ailments, if the compost doesn’t warm up enough to finish seeding, if I add compost next season, it may also contain thousands of viable weed seeds. And who needs it? So, what should I do with shady weeds? So much the better for me, they go to the chickens. Otherwise, I would send them to the city’s compost factory, where, as I know, they will be composted at a temperature at which the seeds will be ready.

Once my garden is cleaned and cleaned, I add about an inch of compost and lightly apply it to the soil. Now, by adding compost, I enrich the existing soil with more nutritious organic matter, leaving it enough time to develop its magic. The end result will be an ideal growing environment if I am ready to start my garden next spring.

But there’s one last step I’m taking here before calling it a day. A three-inch thick layer of wheat straw mulch works wonders for me when it comes to protecting the exposed surface of the soil while slowly adding even more organic matter when it crumbles in winter. In spring, this is the perfect environment for planting my new seeds and plants from Burpee homesteads.

So, as a reminder, peel, peel, add compost, then mulch. And if you’re ready to start gardening next season, we’re back with useful podcasts to help you improve your gardening experience and knowledge.
